  • Wheelchair accessible vehicles for the elderly: the mobility solution for an ageing population

    wav for elderly

In the UK, people are living longer than ever before. In the past decade alone, the number of centenarians (those aged 100 or more) has risen by 65 percent, according to figures from the Office of National Statistics.

One of the main concerns with an ageing population is mobility. As we get older, our bodies become less flexible and suddenly everyday tasks like visiting friends and family or taking a trip to the supermarket can become difficult.

However, old age shouldn’t be a barrier which stops a person from living the life they want to. Thankfully, there are a number of suitable mobility cars for the elderly to make getting from A to B as easy as can be.

What to look for in a WAV for the elderly

Wheelchair accessible vehicles are designed to allow drivers and passengers to enter or exit in a quick, convenient and dignified manner. The best WAVs generally have a low floor combined with a lightweight ramp to allow easy access. There's no need to vacate the wheelchair, as it is securely locked down and essentially becomes a seat in the car. Other passengers can join drivers on their journey, too – not only do wheelchair accessible vehicles promote independence; they promote social interaction also.

Before committing to a purchase, you'll ultimately want to check out different models to find one which suits your requirements, in terms of how the wheelchair will fit, whether it offers a comfortable drive and if it will accommodate any other essential equipment (for example an oxygen cylinder, walking frame or other mobility aid).

Each WAV is unique, but the good news is that many vehicles can be customised to a certain degree to meet the requirements of the driver, with many features included as standard (for example, a frail driver may require a hands-only controlled car or an automatic).
